My Entrepreneurship Story

I’ve been exposed to entrepreneurship as long as I can remember, my parents left everyone they knew of to come down to Florida to start their own business. Starting a business in an entirely new environment is very difficult. I distinctly remember my parents working 10 to 12 hours a day every day of the week in order to get by. This equated to about a minimum of 70 hours a week. Now the average amount of time worked for the average 9 to 5 job is about 40 hours. So essential my parents were almost working two jobs at once. Their hard work and dedicated basically facilitated onto me because they didn’t want me to work long hours. Instead, they’d much rather have me get a college education hence why I am here at the University of Florida. And in relation to the pie chart showing how much entrepreneurs make per year; my parents fall about right in the middle. Making just a little over the right amount being able to live comfortably, taking care of their kids, and still being able to save for their retirement.
The reason why I enrolled in ENT 3003 was because I’ve always been interested in entrepreneurship, I thought it'd be an interesting class to take, and I've thought about being able to start a business either by myself or under a partnership with close friends and family members. What I hope to get out of this class is a foundation on entrepreneurship and what to/what not to do when you start a business.

  1. What a great story you have to tell, David! I always find stories like this incredibly inspiring. How selfless your parents were to sacrifice their time so you can save a little of yours. My parents also sacrifice(d) a lot of their time working in order to live comfortably. I think having personal family experience with entrepreneurship is the biggest motivation. I wish you the best of luck in your future business.

  2. That was a an excellent read, David. Family is the core of life and you being able to follow in similar footsteps as your family is a great start to success. I have also found a passion in business from my father and I feel like there is no one else that can help you out more than your loved ones.

  4. Hi David, your parents risk-taking abilities have clearly paid off with hard work and dedication. It's impressive that you recognize their work ethic and it seems like it has inspired you to try and make a living the same way your parents did. 70 hours of work per week is insane but obviously worth it in your story as your parents are now able to live comfortably.

  5. Hey David, it's great to see that your parents' hard work truly paid off. Like James said before me, it's great that you understand the dedication that task took, and now you want to pursue a career in business and entrepreneurship yourself. I wish the best of luck to you and I'm sure all of your to do/not to do's will be answered.
